On Thursday, 10 April 2025, the Institute of International and Security Studies at the University of Wrocław hosted a screening of the documentary Refugee Girls, followed by an expert panel discussion. The event was organised in cooperation with partner universities as part of the Arqus Alliance.
Refugee Girls, directed by Italian filmmaker Leonardo Cinieri Lombroso, portrays the experiences of refugee women studying at European universities. The documentary, which premiered at the Visioni dal Mondo Film Festival in Milan in 2023, explores themes of integration, identity, and the challenges young refugee women face as they embark on academic journeys in unfamiliar countries.
The screening and discussion featured Elisa Gamba, a PhD candidate at the University of Padua and a researcher specialising in refugee inclusion in higher education. Gamba introduced the film by presenting the background of its production and the key research questions that inspired its creation.
Following the screening, a roundtable discussion was moderated by Professor Magdalena Ratajczak. The panel included Professor Jarosław Jarząbek (Institute of International and Security Studies) and Dr Anna Cichecka (Institute of Sociology, University of Wrocław), who shared their insights on migration, integration policies, and the role of universities in supporting students with refugee backgrounds.
We sincerely thank all participants for their presence and active engagement in the discussion.
The event was organised by Professor Magdalena Ratajczak.
