From May 5th to 9th, 2025, students from the University of Wrocław participated in an international workshop entitled “Migrations and Territories in the 21st Century,” organized as part of the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). The host institution was the Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI) in Portugal. Part of the course was delivered online in April.

The project’s on-site component took place in a small town in Portugal and gathered 15 participants, including 9 students from the University of Wrocław. The participants represented various nationalities and cultural backgrounds. The Wrocław group included students from the Faculty of Social Sciences of Polish and Ukrainian origin. In addition, students from Romania, Spain, and Moldova also took part in the event.

During the five-day programme, participants had the opportunity to explore the topic of migration through lectures and discussions led by scholars from diverse academic and cultural contexts, including Armenia, Portugal, and Poland. The group was also accompanied by a mentor from Iran who supported participants in reflection and group integration.

The project provided space for the exchange of academic but also personal and emotional experiences. Topics discussed included individual migration stories and territorial issues such as the war in Ukraine, migration from Moldova to Romania, and the situation in Transnistria.

The lectures’ thematic scope was diverse, allowing each participant to find topics of personal interest—which was a value in itself. A particularly important aspect of the event was its capacity to inspire further reflection, conversation, and intercultural dialogue.

Despite minor organisational shortcomings, participants described the project as a moving and meaningful experience that remains vivid in their memories.

Kristina shared:
“I’m very happy I had the opportunity to take part in the Blended Intensive Programme ‘Migrations and Territories in the 21st Century’. It was a special time, full of inspiring people, shared activities, and positive emotions. I’m grateful for every moment spent in this international group, and I wholeheartedly recommend participating in such programmes to anyone who wants to broaden their horizons and create new memories.”

Alexandra from Romania added:
“I found the ‘Migrations and Territories in the 21st Century’ project interesting and engaging. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to build relationships with fellow students and lecturers and share experiences during group work. However, I would have expected some of the topics to be addressed in greater depth, as some of the presentations were fairly general and already familiar to many participants. Overall, I would rate the project a 7 out of 10.”
