Between June 3 and 10, 2025, the Institute of International and Security Studies at the University of Wrocław hosted a specialised workshop entitled “Making Sanctions Smart Again”, led by Professor Robert Huish from Dalhousie University (Canada).

The workshop was designed for graduate students, particularly those enrolled in the MA in International Relations and the Erasmus Mundus Global Studies (EMGS) programme. The sessions focused on enhancing participants’ understanding of contemporary challenges related to the use of international sanctions, their effectiveness, and the ethical dimensions of sanctioning policies.

As part of the visit, Professor Huish also met with Professor Krzysztof Kociubiński, Director of the Institute, and Dr. Marek Musioł, Deputy Director for International Cooperation. The meeting addressed further development of the collaboration initiated in 2022 under the Erasmus+ KA171 programme. The parties also acknowledged the need to formalise additional cooperation agreements.

Key outcomes of this ongoing partnership include joint publications, collaborative R&D projects, international academic conferences, as well as numerous expert visits and exchanges between the two institutions.

The European Commission fully funded Professor Huish’s visit and stay under the Erasmus Mundus programme.
