We are pleased to announce that Dr Wojciech Szczerbowicz, a faculty member of our Institute, has co-authored a monograph dedicated to science diplomacy and foreign policy in Northern Europe, encompassing the Baltic Sea region and the European Arctic. The volume has been published by the prestigious Routledge publishing house.

In an era of increasing international uncertainty and tension, science diplomacy is evolving from a “soft” addition to interstate relations into a strategic resource. It significantly influences the positioning of states, their ability to shape global agendas, and their capacity for building resilience. The monograph illustrates how various Northern European countries design and implement their own models of science diplomacy, linking them to foreign policy objectives, security, and development priorities.

A key academic strength of this publication is its clear comparative structure. Successive chapters guide the reader through specific country case studies, embedded within a consistent analytical framework. This approach facilitates both selective reading and a comprehensive understanding of differences in strategic approaches.

The monograph was developed as part of the Science Diplomacy in Northern Europe project, funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) OPUS 22 grant (2021/43/B/HS5/01638) and hosted by Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (Principal Investigator: Dr Monika Szkarłat). Dr Wojciech Szczerbowicz served as a co-investigator in the project. His contribution stems from his expertise in Arctic international relations and the intersections of science, politics, and regional construction.
